The Island
Castletown & the South of the Isle of Man
Castletown was the Isle of Man's capital until 1869. It is a small harbour town in the south of the island, dominated by medieval Castle Rushen.
History on the doorstep
Castle Rushen stands at the heart of the town, beside the harbour. John Betjeman described it as the best-preserved castle in Europe. Within a few minutes' walk are the Old House of Keys, where the island's parliament once sat, the Old Grammar School and the Nautical Museum, so the town's past is part of everyday life.
The streets around the Market Square and the harbour are lined with limestone buildings, with shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants close at hand. Rushen Abbey is a short drive away in nearby Ballasalla.
Schools
King William's College, an independent school offering the International Baccalaureate, and its preparatory school, The Buchan School, are both in Castletown, as is Castle Rushen High School. See our guide to schools in Castletown.

The coast and countryside
Castletown sits on Castletown Bay, with the Langness peninsula and Castletown Golf Links to the east and the coast running west towards Scarlett. Derbyhaven, a small harbour on the far side of the bay, is a short drive away.
Beyond the town, the south of the island takes in the harbours of Port St Mary and Port Erin, Silverdale Glen near Ballasalla, and farmland rising to South Barrule, at 483 metres the highest hill in the south.
